Four Questions You Need to Ask at the End of Every Interview

When your interview comes to an end, you’re given the opportunity to ask questions of the interviewer. This is your chance to do two things: impress the hiring manager with smart, insightful questions and find out if the company is a place that you would actually want to work.

During the stressful interview process, it can be hard to come up with smart questions that will give you insight into the organization. This means you need to think ahead and be prepared on what you plan to ask. In particular, there are four questions that you should ask at the end of any job interview to show you’re serious about being their number one choice.

  1. What makes the job difficult?

Everyone has challenges in their work. You should find out what your most likely challenges will be if you take on the position for which you are interviewing. The answer to this question will give you more insight into how the organization is structured and what the scope of your responsibilities will be. You’ll also find out if the company has supports in place to help staff members overcome their challenges.

  1. What is a great day like?

You don’t want to know only about the downsides of the job or the things you might struggle with – you also want to know what the company defines as winning in the position. When you ask about what makes a day great, you’ll find out what the key measures of success are for the position that you would fill.

  1. How does the job support the company mission?

This question gives you insight into both the company’s core values and core mission and will also give you a better idea of how you would fit into the company hierarchy. You want your job to have meaning, which usually means that it is part of a broader effort to accomplish something positive for the organization.

  1. What are the people at the company like?

This question will give you a lot of insight into the company culture and into whether the work environment is a good fit for you. Ideally, the hiring manager interviewing you will seem to know his or her coworkers well and will have a generally positive view about them. If the hiring manager can recognize strengths of staff members and talks about doing collaborative work, the company may be a good place for you if you enjoy working with others and forming workplace friendships with your peers.
